Ethnic Minority Youth Career and College Fairs

The Office of Diversity and Community Relations is pleased to offer historically ethnic minority high school youth career and college fair programming to include Latino, Asian and African-American fairs in service of these ethnic minority groups.  In partnership with Edgewood College and the Madison Metropolitan School District, the Office of Diversity and Community Relations coordinates, plans and supports these events, which are open to all high schools within the college’s district.

The ethnic minority high school youth career and college fairs provide high school youth from these groups with the opportunity to explore career areas and receive postsecondary information from Wisconsin colleges and universities in an informal and fun setting.

Several components that distinguish ethnic minority high school youth career and college fair programming includes:

  • Workshop sessions cover a broad range of career areas.
  • Practioners from these career areas are invited to share career information with the high school youth.  These practioners are internal to our institutions (Madison College, Edgewood and MMSD) or external members of our ethnic minority communities.
  • Presenters are reflective of the ethnic minority group targeted with each respective fair and have a meaningful personal knowledge of, and connection with, the community of the minority ethnic group being served.  The Latino fair does require that all presenters have strong Spanish skills as all information is presented in Spanish.
  • Each event features a college fair with a number of Wisconsin private and public universities and colleges participating. All participating students are required to attend the college fair.
  • As much as possible, participating university and college representatives are also reflective of the ethnic minority high school youth being served at each event.

These key components for the ethnic minority high school youth career and college fairs provide for role modeling, networking and mentorship not only for the high school students being served, but also for the participating faculty, staff and members of our respective ethnic minority communities.
