How to Apply to an Apprenticeship

Applications are taken by local trade committees and by the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards, not by Madison Area Technical College. Each committee determines the selection criteria for the trade, which means the application process will differ by trade. For specific information about applying, you must contact the local trade committee directly. Contact information for each trade committee can be found by clicking on a trade on the right.

Construction Apprenticeships

In general, you can expect that an application, test, and interview will be part of the application process. You will need to get application information directly from the local trade committee (see the right hand tool bar). The construction trades use two methods: the rank order list and the letter of introduction.

In the letter of introduction method (most common), applicants who meet the basic requirements are given a letter from the sponsoring committee stating they are eligible to hired as apprentices. They must then find an employer to sponsor their apprenticeship. Frequently the committee will provide a list of participating employers.

In the rank order list method (less common), the committee creates a list of candidates in order of their accumulative scores on written and oral examinations. An employer seeking an apprentice will make a request to the appropriate apprenticeship committee. The committee will contact the next person on the list and ask him/her to report for acceptance into the apprenticeship program and to sign the contract.

Industrial Apprenticeships

An applicant must find an apprenticeship with a sponsoring employer on his or her own (similar to looking for a job). Once the applicant has found a position, the employer starts the apprenticeship registration process by contacting a Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards (BAS) Representative. If your employer is in Dane or Rock counties, contact BAS Representative Mary Pierce at (608) 246-7900. If your employer is in another county in the Madison Area Technical College district, contact Debbie Schanke at (608)-246-3887.
