Disability Insurance

UNUM logoMadison College provides an income protection benefit for all full-time employees through UNUM. This is effective immediately upon hire, and the College pays the full premium.
 
Disability insurance pays a percentage of lost wages for maternity leave or a qualified non-work-related injury or illness. 
 
Short-term disability insurance - key points:

  • For qualified absences over 5 days (or equivalent of 1 work week)
  • Sick leave must be used first
  • Pays 75% of weekly earnings up to $1,846 per week
  • Can be combined with family medical leave (FMLA) for 12 weeks   
  • Waiting periods to receive payments (also called elimination periods) are: 30 days for Faculty/Counselors, and 14 days for PSRP/Administrators
  • Faculty/Counselors can receive payments for up to 22 weeks, and PSRP/Administrators can receive payments for up to 24 weeks (the 2-week variation is due to different elimination periods in each policy)

 Long-term disability insurance - key points:

  • For qualified absences longer than what is covered by short-term disability insurance
  • Pays 66.67% of monthly earnings up to $8,000 per month, up to a maximum time period depending on the disability
  • Waiting period to receive payments (also called elimination period) is 180 days or the date that short-term disability ends, if applicable

Process to file a claim:

   1.  Employee notifies supervisor if unable to work
   2.  Employee requests FMLA leave of absence through Workday
   3.  Supervisor notifies HR Generalist
   4.  HR Generalist sends FMLA and disability paperwork to employee
   5.  Employee files short-term disability claim
