May a student in an online class discussion use a FERPA hold to protect his or her identify during an online class discussion? Students cannot use FERPA holds as a tool to be anonymous. Faculty may disclose the first and last name of all students in the class to one another. However, if there is a FERPA hold, the name of the student should not be disclosed to the public. This may be explained in the course description. There may be very limited circumstances where a student’s identity is protected. In these instances, please contact Enrollment Services, at (608) 249-6944.
