Summer Courses for Teens

Career Discovery:  Boot Camps for Youth Ages 11-15

We are once again offering exciting occupational non-credit summer courses for teens and middle school students in Summer 2015. 

In addition to the courses targeted to teens, underage students can enroll in many of our other noncredit courses if the subject matter is age-appropriate and permission forms are completed.

Health Care Occupations Boot Camp

Each day, students will have hands-on exposure to a different healthcare occupation (nursing, dental, RT, emergency medicine and PT programs). Students will work in the new state-of-the-art Health Education facilities to check vital signs, do assessments, make dental molds, wrap injuries, and take part in a simulated emergency.

Biotech Boot Camp

Biotechnology has applications for agriculture, biofuels, molecular identification based on DNA bar coding, molecular biology, stem cells and regenerative medicine.  Work in the Stem Cell Lab with Dr. Thomas Tubon to get a taste of the various careers in biotechnology in a molecular biology lab built to industry specifications.  Much of the time is spent doing hands-on work to create biofuels, do biomedical and molecular biology research and development and agricultural bioscience experiments. Script Writing Boot Camp

Instructor John Galligan will teach how to write in cinematic language, using images, dialogue, and action. Students will learn how to develop characters and structure stories, and how to convey ideas in conventional screenplay format. Using these tools, students will compose and polish a short, original screenplay. Class activities will include film screenings, workshops, group projects, and dramatic readings of selected scripts. Students do not need any prior creative writing experience but are asked to arrive with a short written summary of a favorite film or TV episode.

Movie Makers Boot Camp

From script to screening in one week! Learn how to draw a storyboard, stage a scene, set up lights, work in a crew, shoot, edit, add special effects and export - resulting in a complete 1 minute film. All video equipment and software provided by Madison College for use during this bootcamp with instructors Emmalee Pearson and Stan Luberda.

Sports Journalism Boot Camp

Work with instructor Larry Hansen and local sports journalists to learn to write compelling sports stories for print, Internet and broadcast sources.

Video Storytelling Boot Camp

Instructor Larry Hansen will teach students how to produce short documentaries for the web. Students will learn how to operate video cameras, microphones and tripods before shooting their own video stories. They will learn how to interview others and use narration for their video stories. Students will then learn how to use Mac computers and video editing software for the editing process of these stories. No knowledge of camera equipment or video editing software is needed prior to enrollment. Video equipment will be provided.

Neuroscience Boot Camp

This hands-on camp is for teens who have a strong interest in brain-related research and brain functioning.  We will dissect a sheep brain to learn about brain structure and related parts of the brain which perform complex functions.  Topics include: Principles of Neurotransmission (How do cells in the brain communicate?); Neurological Disorders and Diseases; Genes and Cognition (Learning and Memory); Model Systems to study neurosciences (effect of drugs on heart rate using daphnia); and Optical Illusions and Perception.
