World Languages Course Placement
World Languages Course Placement: Spanish
Spanish 1 WebCAPE score 0-249
Spanish 1 is for students beginning the study of Spanish. On completion students are able to participate in uncomplicated conversations on everyday topics. Some computer use is required for completing on-line homework assignments.
Spanish 2 WebCAPE score 250-324
Spanish 2 emphasizes continued development of more complex communicative skills through practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Upon completion, students possess the skills necessary to handle simple, everyday survival tasks in Hispanic cultures. Prerequisite: one semester of college Spanish or one year of high school Spanish. Some computer use is required for completing on-line homework assignments.
Spanish 3 WebCAPE score 325-399
Spanish 3 enhances complex communicative skills developed during previous semesters of study. Emphasis is placed on speaking and writing in extended contexts, focusing on presentational and interpersonal communication. Prerequisite: two semesters of college Spanish or two years of high school Spanish. Some computer use is required for completing on-line homework assignments.
Spanish 4 WebCAPE score 400-474
This course focuses on expanding vocabulary, increasing grammatical accuracy and achieving paragraph-length discourse. Using the target language, students read and discuss culturally centered texts, review and broaden grammatical knowledge, complete oral and written exercises, write compositions and make formal class presentations. Prerequisite: three semesters of college Spanish or three years of high school Spanish. Some computer use is required for completing on-line homework assignments.
Spanish 5 WebCAPE score 475 and above
Spanish 5 focuses on developing accuracy in written communication skills. Building on their experience in Spanish 4, students study Spanish grammar at greater breadth and depth than was required in previous courses, with the ultimate objective of improving their ability to write accurately in Spanish. Prerequisite: four semesters of college Spanish or four years of high school Spanish.
Notes:
- Students may re-take the placement test once (a total of two attempts).
- Beginning Spanish students who are apprehensive about their first language course might choose to start out with Introductory Spanish Conversation. Although this course is not intended for college transfer, it will help to prepare students for the college transfer Spanish 1.
- Students who are transferring to Madison College from another college or university, and who have one or more language courses on their transcript, do not have to take the placement test if they wish to continue in the same language.
- Courses in Arabic and Chinese do not currently require placement test scores.
- Students should bring their placement score printout to class on the first day.

French 1 is for students beginning the study of French. It emphasizes development of basic communicative skills through practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing. On completion students are able to participate in uncomplicated conversations on everyday topics.
French 2 WebCAPE 231-309
French 2 emphasizes continued development of more complex communicative skills through practice in listening, speaking and writing. Upon completion, students possess the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to handle simple, everyday survival tasks in francophone cultures. Prerequisite: One semester of college French or one year of high school French.
French 3 WebCAPE score 310-399
In French 3 a review of grammar from previous semesters is initiated and vocabulary is broadened. Emphasis is placed on speaking and writing in French in “paragraphs” as a full participant in a conversation. Prerequisite: Two semesters of college French, or two years of high school French.
French 4 WebCAPE score 400 and above
This course is designed for the student who has completed three semesters of college French, or three years of high school French. The review of grammar from 20-802-223, French 3, is completed and vocabulary is broadened. Prerequisite: three semesters of college French, or three years of high school French.
