Petition Process


The petition process is how you tell Madison College you are ready to move forward with core program classes. At the point of petitioning, you will have:

  • Completed the admissions process
  • Attended the mandatory orientation, Making the Cut

After applying and being admitted into a pre-petition status, you should run your Degree Progress Report to see which requirements you have completed. Your petition must be accepted before you can register for core program courses.

The School of Health Education and the paramedic programs use a different petition process.

  • How are students selected?

    Selection is based on successful completion of all petition requirements, residency priority and then the date your application was completed. Petition requirements may be in progress when you petition, but selection priority will be given to those who have all requirements completed.

    • If the available spaces are not filled by candidates with all requirements completed, the petitioners with in-progress requirements may be tentatively awarded open spots.
    • The tentatively awarded spots will become permanent only after you successfully complete the outstanding requirements.

    Priority is given to district residents, then non-district state residents, followed by out of state residents. Out of state and non-district state residents (including Minnesota residents) are not eligible for program with application deadline prior to January 1 for Fall and/or May 1 for Spring.

    You must petition during the specified petition dates. Do not petition if you have not completed or are in progress with all petition requirements. Run your Degree Progress Report to see which requirements you have completed.

    You will be notified if you are selected for entry into core classes. If you are not selected, we encourage you to petition again during a future petition window. All selection decisions are final and may not be appealed. 

  • When do I petition?

    The School of Business and Applied Arts will send you information on registering for Making the Cut. Register and attend the first session you can as space is limited. Additional sessions may be offered if there still space available in the program. Students who have successfully completed Making the Cut and register in first semester courses will be awarded a seat based on course availability.

    You must petition within four years from the semester for which you were admitted. 

  • How do I learn more?

    Academic Information Sessions will provide you the opportunity to meet with an academic advisor and ask additional questions.

    Students admitted into a pre-petition status have the opportunity to tour the salon and shadow students in the program. Tours are by appointment only, please contact the School of Business and Applied Arts at (608) 246-6003 ext. 8 to schedule an appointment.
