Overview

Wisconsin Statute 36.31 and Madison College policy require us to use the American Council on Education's (ACE) Military Guide credit recommendations. These are based on reviews of military trainings and occupations.

You can compare these recommendations to your program's courses to see where they align or overlap. This is where you may be awarded credit for prior learning.

You have the right to accept or reject the credit recommendations.

Follow the steps below to request credit from military experience.

  • 1.

    Obtain Your Transcripts

    The Joint Services Transcript

The Joint Services Transcript (JST) is the official transcript tool for Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard personnel. Request a PDF version of your JST so you can email it or upload it as needed.

    For Air Force

The Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) automatically captures training, experience and standardized test scores.

    Military Service Records

Your Military Service Records (DD-214) includes your awards, medals, job specialty, and a record of training and schools completed. You may be eligible to receive three wellness and physical education credits for completing basic training, as documented on your DD-214.

  • 2.

    Use the ACE Military Guide

Access the American Council on Education’s (ACE) Military Guide and upload your JST.

You will be given a list of course recommendations that match your training. You may be able to receive credit for these or similar courses.

Compare the ACE list to the program courses in your Degree Progress Report. Your options for credit are where the two lists display similar courses.

  • 3.

    Request Credit Evaluation

Once you find the Madison College classes that match the ACE recommendations, complete and submit the Military Transfer Credit Evaluation form (PDF). Be sure to submit your JST, DD-214, and other appropriate transcripts.

If you are not sure which class is the best match, request an evaluation with your best guess. Faculty will ensure the recommendation is applied to an appropriate class.

Faculty may reject a recommendation due to health, safety, or program accreditation concerns.

It can take 2-6 weeks to process this form. It is best to submit requests as early as possible.

We will email your student account when the evaluation process is complete. You can also check results in your student portal in the Transfer Credit Report.

If you wish to adjust your request or appeal your results, follow up with your advisor or with the CPL team.

When Transfer of Credit is Not Approved

If the ACE Military Guide does not provide a recommendation, you can still submit the transfer credit evaluation form to request credit. Note that without the ACE recommendation, these evaluations are less likely to be approved.

If you receive no credit for your military experience, you may request a PLA to prove your prior learning. Programs will need time to develop a PLA if one is not in place. Please plan accordingly

The other option for demonstrating your knowledge and abilities is to complete a National Exam
