Madison College selected as new Second Chance Pell site

Madison College selected as Second Chance Pell site.

WASHINGTON, DC — Madison College is among a new group of schools included in the the U.S. Department of Education's expansion of the Second Chance Pell Experimental Sites Initiative, which provides need-based Pell grants to inmates in state and federal prisons. Second Chance Pell schools now include 130 colleges in 42 states and the District of Columbia.

Studies show providing access to postsecondary education in prison means inmates are far less likely to recidivate and are better equipped to play productive and positive roles within their communities. Access to postsecondary education also improves prison safety for both incarcerated people and corrections employees alike.

“The ability to support students who may not have thought education was possible is the foundation of our work here at Madison College," said Dr. Jack Daniels, president of Madison College. Participating in such a pivotal program through the U.S. Department of Education will provide access for incarcerated students to attain workforce skills that will go a long way in securing a successful future for themselves. Madison College is fully committed to the success of this program and the students who enroll.”

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos says she has seen firsthand the transformative impact Second Chance Pell has had on those who are incarcerated.

“By expanding this experiment, we are providing a meaningful opportunity for more students to set themselves up for future success in the workforce," said DeVos.
