  • What if I have previously taken a foreign language?

Madison College may award up to four semesters (16 credits) tuition-free credit for previous foreign language study.

To be eligible for the World Languages Retroactive Credit, you cannot be a native speaker of the language you test in. You are considered a native speaker if you were taught in a language through at least ninth grade.

Steps to earn World Languages Retroactive Credit:

    1. Take the World Language Placement Exam and place into a Madison College second-, third-, fourth-, or fifth-level language course.
    2. Take the class you placed into and earn a grade of ‘B’ or better.
    3. Complete and submit the Retroactive Language Credit Request Form (PDF) to Enrollment Services upon completion of the course.

Please allow two to four weeks for posting eligible credits to your student record.

  • Language Course Placement Policies

Some computer use is required for completing online homework assignments for all levels of Spanish, French, and Chinese.

You may retake the placement test once (a total of two attempts).

If you are transferring to Madison College from another college or university and you have one or more language courses on your transcript, you do not need to take the placement test.

Courses in Arabic do not currently require placement testing.

You should bring your placement score printout to class on your first day.
