Madison College alum and employee Chelsey Bauer connects with the branch campus community every day, making sure students, employees and neighbors have access to resources. Busting through challenges and helping students navigate them is her No. 1 priority.

Your first experience at Madison College was unique. Please tell us more.
I started as a student in the criminal justice program here at Madison College and worked as a peer tutor and note taker. I was the first full-time female public safety officer, which allowed me to connect with students and folks from different departments and build those relationships. I eventually earned an associate of science degree in criminal justice, a bachelor’s degree in human services at Upper Iowa University, and a Master's in Community and Organizational Leadership.

You’re now the Eastern Campus Operations Manager for the Watertown and Fort Atkinson campuses. What is that like?
At a branch campus, everyone steps in where needed. It’s busy and unpredictable, but that’s part of what makes it rewarding. No two days are the same—and that’s honestly one of the best parts.

In my role, I wear many hats: student support, outreach, and planning all at once. In the same week, or even the same day, I might move between course planning, addressing building or safety needs, supporting students, recruiting, working on marketing, developing new continuing education ideas, and staying connected with community partners. Things can change quickly, and you just need to pivot to address what comes up. I’m also fortunate to work with a strong, experienced team. That shared commitment and flexibility are what keep everything moving and allow us to be successful.

Being part of Madison College is a family affair, right?
It sure is! It’s definitely been for our family. My stepmom completed her GED at Madison College and eventually earned her associate degree in engineering through Madison College. I think that everyone in my family, including my husband, has taken a class at the college.  One of my half-sisters participated in the Education Academy and is now attending Madison College’s University Transfer program. It’s been meaningful to help her navigate the different processes. My half-sisters and dad also competed in Fort Atkinson’s Metal Mania welding competition as a team. My kids also volunteer at campus events because I want them to see the value of helping others.

What are your super skills?
I think my super skills are making things a reality! When I meet with students, I anticipate issues and get them connected to resources. I don’t back down, I like to advocate for students and bust down those barriers, and do whatever it takes to make that happen. I also love taking a new idea, like tractor safety, which I participated in as a kid, and making that an opportunity for youth again. I am fortunate to have the team and support to make those opportunities happen.

What do you like about being part of the Watertown community?
It’s a great place to live. We have a great public library with a children’s play area. And I like the cinema in town—it’s affordable to see movies. I also look forward to the Watertown Christmas parade each year. The East Region overall is a wonderful place to explore; there are so many parks and trails, and fun events like Goat Fest and Riverfest. I also can’t forget the Little Amerricka amusement park.

What satisfaction do you get from your work?
Madison College has so much to offer—we have many opportunities, and it’s affordable, providing not just learning for students but also wraparound support so they can be successful. I can think of so many things we’ve done on the campus to support students' access, and seeing that happen makes all the hard work worth it. It also motivates us for what we can do next.
