Many Pathways to High School Equivalency

There are many options to earning your high school equivalency, including:

  • Pass four GED tests and a civics test
  • Options for people who earned at least 22 high school credits for 24 college credits in specific subject areas
  • Programs for those who graduated high school or a post-secondary school outside the U.S.
  • Competency-based program that is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills necessary to earn a High School Equivalency diploma
  • A program for migrant and seasonal farm workers and their immediate family members
  • Classes taught in Spanish to help students prepare for the GED exams

GED/HSED Eligibility

To earn a GED or HSED in Wisconsin, you must:

  • Be at least 18½ years old
  • Have lived in Wisconsin for at least 10 days or be a migrant worker or child of a migrant worker
  • Not be currently enrolled in high school
  • Not have a high school diploma

Finish High School Early

Wisconsin state statute (s.118.15) allows students younger than 18½ years old to modify their high school curriculum to earn an HSED with parental and school board approval.

Flexibility and Support

Courses are available online and in-person at six Madison College campuses.

  • Assistance with reading, writing, math, science, social studies, employability, civics and health course assignments
  • Strategies for being a successful student
