Madison College educator L. David Hansen has been honored with the Alex Trebek Legacy Fellowship by the Television Academy Foundation for his work in journalism, film and media education.

Hansen chairs Madison College’s Journalism and Film Department and teaches World Issues Journalism, Media and Democracy, History of World Cinema, Documentary Storytelling and Film Writing.

With decades in higher education, Hansen is passionate about teaching students to develop communication, critical-thinking and storytelling skills while discovering their own voices. He helps students understand themselves, engage meaningfully with their communities and use storytelling to make sense of an increasingly complex world.

“I’ve been fortunate to spend my career doing work I love: teaching journalism, film and storytelling,” Hansen said. “To be recognized with an award associated with Alex Trebek’s legacy of curiosity, knowledge, and lifelong learning is especially meaningful to me.”

Hansen is one of 18 professors selected from colleges and universities nationwide for the 2026 fellowship program.

Since 2021, the Foundation has offered Alex Trebek Legacy Fellowships, established by the Harry & Judy Friedman Family Foundation, in honor of the late television icon and Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, which provide financial support for educators from community colleges and minority-serving institutions to attend its annual Media Educators Conference.
