Online learning was a new experience for many students when COVID-19 closed schools in March 2020. Students had to adjust to a new way of thinking about college classes. While some things changed, many aspects remained the same.

“I am really grateful that Madison College has taken the steps to keep us safe and keep us learning. I am really appreciative of how things have gone so far,” said student Jyotika Dietrich.

Benefits of online classes

Online classes offer a unique experience for students, while continuing to be beneficial for learners.

Flexible schedules and the ability to learn from anywhere are just two of the benefits of learning online.

Jyotika has enjoyed the convenience of virtual learning. She was amazed to work and attend school at the same time with the flexibility of her classes.

“I have some great teachers helping me through it,” she said.

Help from online instructors

The support students receive from instructors did not change when we transitioned from in person to online classrooms. Student Bryce Farnsworth learned instructors are here to help if you reach out to let them know about any challenges.

“They are super willing to help. They are always willing to make accommodations for whatever you’ve got going on. It helps take the pressure off the student and makes it easier to learn,” said Bryce.

Support for online learners

Support services for students didn't go away when we could no longer attend class on campus either. Service departments continued to be resources through video chats or by phone.

Online learners still have access to services such as counseling, advising, disability resources, veterans services and academic support.

Essence Hawkins discovered she can connect with her tutor by video. She says she would not be successful in math without this support. They can share screens and work through problems just like they would in person.

“Everything is virtual. Everything is online. We can’t be in person, but honestly online is a lot smoother and a lot easier,” shared Essence. “Madison College is right for me because everything I want to do and can do is online. So it is super convenient and I can still go to school."
