Search | Menu President Berne marks first year with focus on student completion and workforce, community needs
In just one year, President Dr. Jennifer Berne has become a familiar presence across Madison College and the communities it serves.
She has spent countless hours shaking hands, listening and learning, driving the highways that connect Madison College's campuses, celebrating new facilities, and showing up in unexpected places—from the finish line of the Celebrate a Nurse 5K in Reedsburg to reading stories to children in the college's daycare.
With a new academic year beginning, Dr. Berne aims to build on the relationships and momentum of her first year and turn what she learned into a sharper focus on student success.
What was the highlight of your first year as Madison College President?
Dr. Berne: I learned that Madison College is like the most popular kid at the lunch table—everybody wants to sit next to us. That says a lot about how important the college is to our communities and how deeply people care about its mission.
Having the privilege of representing Madison College has allowed me to meet so many people and hear so many stories. That's been one of the greatest highlights of this first year.
It's also been incredible to watch students who are just beginning their careers at Madison College, knowing they're going to go out and make a difference throughout our communities.
You’ve prioritized having conversations across the community. What stood out in those discussions?
Dr. Berne: The communities that we serve are special places with people who have really deep roots and deep affection. They feel part of Madison College, and they want to tell you about it.
You've been at the college and in the community for a year. Has it matched your expectations?
Dr. Berne: It’s bigger and more energetic than I had expected. There are a million things to do and a million people to meet, and I really like that. I like being in downtown Madison and going to the theater. I enjoy the Overture Center, particularly where there is such a diversity of things to experience. I also enjoy spending time in Pheasant Branch Conservancy. It's beautiful to watch the seasons change. Last month, I went to a Mallards game. I even threw out the first pitch, which was really fun.
I also love showing off Madison College--a college that is so high-tech, beautifully maintained and vibrant. My friends and family who've come to visit have been extremely impressed.
Looking back, would the 2025 Dr. Berne be surprised by how you now see your role?
Dr. Berne: I probably didn't realize how important it is to represent Madison College every minute.
I was out with my husband a few weeks ago, and it occurred to me that we probably can't argue in public because somebody who's associated with the college will say that they saw Dr. Berne arguing with her husband in the grocery store.
I feel a responsibility to have a presence. And it's not me; it's me on behalf of Madison College. I didn't understand how much weight that holds. And I relish it. It’s one of the most important parts of my role, taking what happens inside, outside these doors: sharing the message and attracting people to come check us out.
What are your priorities for Madison College this year and beyond?
Dr. Berne: To build on Madison College’s strengths and really focus on why students come here and how we can help them achieve their goals. We’re well known and have many students applying and enrolling. But not enough persevere through an entire program and complete their 60 credits, ready to transfer or enter the workforce. My short-term focus is reminding us that student completion is our responsibility. My long-term focus is putting together programs and processes so many more students can complete what they start and return to their communities and prosper.
