If you've been to the Fort Atkinson campus, you've likely met Alex, a 2015 liberal arts and science transfer grad. Madison College had such a profound impact on him that he is now one of three incredible administrative coordinators for the eastern campuses, inspiring students to explore their learning and life potential.

You've had several roles at the Fort Atkinson campus (peer tutor, student support assistant, and administrative coordinator). What's been the most impactful?

That would be my current role. As a full-time employee, I participate in professional development activities, including serving as a leader in SAGA (an affinity group for LGBTQIA+ employees), regional representative and liaison for Protect the Pack, and co-facilitator for Safe Zone programming. I also have the opportunity to work with more students.

If you could give advice to your first-week Madison College employee, what would it be?

As a student worker, I'd tell myself to become more involved with student activities and not be afraid to travel to other campuses! I applied to be the Watertown representative for Phi Theta Kappa and served as co-chair of the engagement committee during my time as a student. We went to Orlando, Florida, and we ended up winning the first international award for our chapter. It was my first time flying and going out of state without my family. It was really cool to have that experience of going with the group and accepting that award.

What's your secret talent?

My secret talents are typically a secret to me until someone points them out! LOL. If I had to pick one, I'm pretty good at recognizing strengths in people and providing a space for them to develop and incorporate their strengths into their daily lives.

What’s your favorite spot in the Fort Atkinson/Watertown area?

Is home an option? LOL I'm typically a homebody, but when I do go out to dinner/ lunch, Amado's Jr. is my go-to in Watertown, and Paddy Coughlin's Pub in Fort Atkinson. My goal this summer is to push myself out of my comfort zone and explore the city. Another favorite is the library. Both Watertown and Fort have such a welcoming environment. It's easy to sit down and get lost in a book if you need a quiet place away from home.

Who has had the most influence in your life?

I've had four people who have really helped shape my life; my childhood years would be my mom. I'd like to think I inherited her empathy, kindness, compassion, strength, and resilience. In high school, it would be my instructor, Stephanie Bentheimer (Mrs. B). She taught me the importance of accountability, dedication, structure, and investing in myself. At the time, I had no interest in education and was a "lost soul." With her instruction and encouragement, I learned my value and discovered a passion for learning. She saved my life.

Renee Alfano was the mentor I didn't know I needed, and she recognized my strengths and potential. She helped me find my voice quite literally. She’d sit at the farthest spot away from me during PTK officer meetings, and anytime I'd talk, she'd say, "I can't hear you, what did you say?" Renee helped shape the leader I am today.

My current colleague, Kelly, has had a major impact on being an "adult." When I first started, she noticed that I was going out for lunch and offered tips on how to prepare my lunch. I've saved hundreds LOL! She shows me empathy and kindness when life throws a curveball and offers advice from a place of experience and an open mind.

What's Fort Atkinson campus's hidden gem?

I would say the Welcome Center. There is a misconception that we do "clerical duties," but the reality is that we are knowledgeable about financial aid, the bookstore, technology, advising, and other resources. We are typically the first point of contact for students and spend hours investigating questions they have, so they don’t play the phone transfer game. I encourage anyone new to the campus (or even if you've been at college for years) to stop by for a tour of the Fort Atkinson campus and chat with us.
