Scholarships Elevate Students’ Success

Published:

Thanks to generous community donors, the Madison College Foundation awards over $2 million in scholarships, emergency grants and other program support each year.

Scholarship awards are among the most important ways to help students find success by relieving financial burdens as they pursue higher education. With the help of a scholarship, students can achieve their goals for a positive educational journey, a rewarding career, and a successful life, as these two student stories demonstrate.

I graduated from high school a year early and became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) through Central Wisconsin Center immediately after turning 18. Before then, I had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. After having the opportunity to work as a CNA, I found support and encouragement from the nursing staff that I worked with. They would praise me for my performance and heavily encouraged me to attend classes at Madison College, as they stated “You can do it! You will be a great nurse!”

I took their advice and applied to Madison College. I struggled to find the funding to begin schooling, as I was unable to access my parent’s information, which made me unable to complete the FAFSA. After two years of digging up information about my parents and saving money I had earned as a CNA, I was finally able to begin my pre-requisites for the nursing program. Today, I am a 25-year-old single parent with a two-year-old daughter. I work two jobs and attend classes full-time. The majority of my income is spent paying for household bills and transportation. I feel as though financial security is not only a daily stressor but has also created a large barrier to my access to education. I am pleased to express the ways in which staff and students at Madison College have supported me through my journey and have recommended this school to others.

Being a Madison native and growing up several blocks away from the Truax campus, I have been able to watch this campus grow from one small brick building to the bustling campus it is today.

When I learned that I could take nursing classes here, I knew immediately that I would do it. The affordability in comparison with other campuses also made it a no-brainer. I simply cannot afford to attend out-of-state schools, so, with Truax being my home campus, the cost and convenience of being so close to home have been a major blessing in my life.

I am also a first-generation college student, and with my parents getting older I have begun to take on more responsibilities in helping to care for and provide for them. Truax has allowed me to pursue higher education and better myself while simultaneously taking care of the responsibilities my personal life holds.

Due to the rigor of the nursing program, I have not been able to work as much as I would like to, and finances have become quite tight. Madison College's scholarships have allowed me to pay my bills while attending school thus providing a peace of mind that I can't imagine finding elsewhere. Without FAFSA and the scholarships I have received at Madison College, I would not be able to attend college. I work each day that I am not in class, and I am still unable to meet basic financial needs and pay bills.

The scholarship foundation has allowed me to chase my dreams and become the best version of myself.

"This scholarship award means I will be able to afford to go to school while reducing the amount of stress I have due to work obligations. Truly a life-changing experience for me and I cannot thank you enough."
