Students take the spotlight in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"
Madison College Performing Arts presents Tony Award-winning musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” April 17–19 at the Mitby Theater on the Truax campus.
The fast-paced, interactive musical comedy follows a group of spelling bee contestants as they navigate adolescence, identity and ambition. Each performance includes a unique twist: audience participation. Four volunteers will be invited onstage to compete alongside the cast, making every show a one-of-a-kind experience.
The production is directed by David Pausch, with music direction by Madison College instructor Jamie Kember, vocal direction by Sami Elmer and choreography by KLJ Movement.
Student takes center stage
The show highlights the work of Madison College students and alumni both onstage and behind the scenes.
Student stage manager Rosalyn Doebereiner says the experience reflects her passion for the arts.
“Having a place to be part of something artistic that brings joy to others is what I want to do with my life,” Doebereiner said. “This show gives me that opportunity to bring creativity to the community.”
Student performer Webb Beatty, who plays William Barfee, said the production has been both a creative challenge and a welcoming experience.
“My experience performing in Spelling Bee has opened my eyes to what theater can be when a group of hard-working people push to make a show the best it can be,” Beatty said. “William Barfee is a completely new kind of character for me, and I’ve enjoyed pushing myself to make him feel real to the audience.”
Originally written by Rachel Sheinkin with music and lyrics by William Finn, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” remains a fan favorite, with productions staged nationwide and a recent Broadway revival featuring guest performers.
Performances are April 17–19. Tickets are $20 for adults, $13 for ages 17 and younger and seniors 65+, and free for Madison College students.
