Madison College students have an extensive network of digital information at their fingertips. Still, the ultimate goal is for students to learn how to consume and utilize digital technology intelligently for success in their academic and professional lives.
The objective is to empower students to use technology confidently and responsibly, enabling them to connect, create, and thrive, according to Dr. Tina Rettler-Pagel, a Madison College staff member helping to lead the digital literacy efforts.
"At Madison College, we recognize that digital literacy goes beyond knowing how to use technology. It's about empowering students to think critically, communicate effectively, and solve real-world problems," Rettler-Pagel says. "By embedding digital literacy into our student experience, we're not just preparing learners for their next class, but preparing them to lead, adapt, and innovate in a rapidly evolving world."
Introducing students to digital tools and resources will prepare them for success in the workforce or transferring to a four-year institution.
A new steering team is defining digital literacy at the college, developing a strategic, data-driven framework, and establishing an operational team to advance the work. Success and student progress will be measured by surveys, focus groups, and embedded assessments.
"Our faculty and staff are essential to building a culture of digital literacy at Madison College. When educators model confident and ethical use of technology, they help students build the habits and mindsets employers now expect," Rettler-Pagel says. "By integrating technology thoughtfully into teaching and support services, they help students build the confidence and skills needed to succeed in both academic and professional settings."
This effort will reach all corners of the college through student digital literacy workshops, technology access programs, digital learning plans, and training opportunities for faculty and staff.
Success in this area is essential, as it aligns with the college's Vision 2030 strategic plan, which aims to enhance digital literacy and ensure equitable access to technology resources.
