Madison College cosmetology graduate Myra Crump marked an important milestone at her December 2025 commencement ceremony. Despite significant personal challenges, she completed her program and is already looking ahead, with hopes of returning to Madison College one day as an instructor.
Congratulations on your December graduation! How did you pick Madison College and the cosmetology program?
It felt safe, and it was close to home. I don’t really have much support, so I wanted something convenient. I also liked that the program prepares you for many areas: hair, waxing, skincare and nails. I plan to enroll in the LPN program next so I can eventually do injections in a surgical center.
You faced some challenges in the past year. How did you overcome them?
I was homeless for a lot of the first two semesters. Then my sister passed away, and I lost my whole support system. And I was pregnant, with my baby due in early January. So, it’s been a lot to deal with while being here full-time. It wasn’t always easy to be where I needed to be or do what I had to do while I was homeless. But I had a lot of support from my instructors and other students in the program. I’ve also made lifelong friends here at the college when I didn’t have support from anyone else.

Please tell us about a favorite project in the cosmetology program.
We did a “Decades” project where we spun a wheel and tag-teamed on different decades. We did a presentation together and talked about the hair, fashion and food of that decade.
What advice do you have for current or prospective Madison College students?
Whatever you go for, stick with it. I never considered leaving this program, even with everything else going on in my life. If it’s the wrong time and you do need a break, make sure you go back to it as soon as you can—the longer you take, the harder it will be to finish. You’re investing in yourself. Do your homework. Be on time. Take good notes. Don’t give up, or you’re just wasting money and the progress you’ve already made.
What’s next for you, in addition to spending time with your new baby?
I’d like to work in a surgical or cosmetic center one day. Right now, I already have a job at my externship salon and plan to work there full-time for a couple of years. Eventually, I’d like to work part-time and come back to teach at Madison College.
