Program Overview
The Medical Assistant program at Madison College is designed to teach you to do the work of a physician's office employee, from general office procedures to elementary medical laboratory techniques and helping in the exam room. Training includes placement in a local office/clinic during the final semester.
If you have a genuine interest in medicine and in helping people, this could be a great fit for you.
Please note that after acceptance to this program, you will be required to complete a background check and provide documentation of current required-immunizations and current Healthcare Provider CPR certification. More information about these requirements will be provided at program orientation.
Program Details
Wisconsin law requires background checks for persons who provide care for others or have access to people who receive care. This law applies to students in many School of Health Sciences programs. Please review the Caregiver Background Check information on the School of Health Sciences Forms and Policies.

First Semester31-509-301Medical Asst Admin Procedures
Introduces medical assistant students to office management and business, business administration, and the electronic medical record (EMR) in the medical office. Students learn to schedule appointments, perform filing, record keeping, inventory of supplies, telephone and reception duties, as well as effective communication with patients and other medical office staff.2 credits31-509-302Human Body in Health & Disease
Focuses on diseases that are frequently first diagnosed and treated in the medical office setting. Students learn to recognize the causes, signs, and symptoms of diseases of the major body systems as well as the diagnostic procedures, usual treatment, prognosis and prevention of common diseases. Introduces medical assistant students to laboratory procedures commonly performed by medical assistants in a medical office setting. Students perform CLIA waived routine laboratory procedures commonly performed in the ambulatory care setting. Students follow laboratory safety requirements and federal regulations while performing specimen collection and processing, microbiology and urinalysis testing.2 credits31-509-304Medical Asst Clin Procedures 1
Introduces medical assistant students to the clinical procedures performed in the medical office setting. Students perform basic examining room skills including screening, vital signs, patient history, minor surgery and patient preparation for routine and specialty exams in the ambulatory setting.4 credits31-501-101Medical Terminology
Focuses on the component parts of medical terms: prefixes, suffixes and word roots. Students practice formation, analysis and reconstruction of terms. Emphasis is on spelling, definition and pronunciation. Introduction to operative, diagnostic, therapeutic and symptomatic terminology of all body systems, as well as systemic and surgical terminology, is included.3 creditsSecond Semester31-509-308Pharmacology for Allied Health
Introduces students to medications and basic pharmacology principles. Students apply basic pharmacodynamics to identify common medications and calculate dosages in preparation for medication administration.2 credits31-509-305Med Asst Lab Procedures 2
Prepares students to perform laboratory procedures commonly performed by medical assistants in the ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician. Students perform phlebotomy, immunology, hematology and chemistry laboratory procedures. Prerequisite: All first semester courses. Corequisite: Medical Assistant Clinical Procedures 2, 31-509-306 and Medical Assistant Practicum, 31-509-310.2 credits31-509-306Med Asst Clin Procedures 2
Prepares students to perform EKG, spirometry, and administer medications including topical, oral, and injectable. Must have completed all first semester courses.3 credits31-509-307Medical Office Insurance & Finance
Introduces medical assistant studies to health insurance and finance in the medical office. Students perform bookkeeping procedures, apply managed care guidelines and complete insurance claim forms. Students used medical coding and managed care terminology to perform insurance-related duties. Prerequisites: Medical Terminology, 10-501-101; Human Body in Health & Disease; 31-509-302; and computer courses.2 credits31-509-309Medical Law, Ethics and Professionalism
Prepares students to display professionalism and perform within ethical and legal boundaries in the health care setting. Students maintain confidentiality, examine legal aspects of the medical record, examine legal and bioethical issues, and demonstrate awareness of diversity. Requires medical assistant students to integrate and apply knowledge and skills from all previous medical assistant courses in actual ambulatory health care settings. Learners perform medical assistant administrative, clinical, and laboratory duties under the supervision of trained mentors to effectively transition to the role of a medical assistant. This is a supervised, unpaid, clinical experience. This program has limited capacity and may reach maximum enrollment quickly. Applying to the Pre-Medical Assistant program early gives you the best chance of securing a spot.
To enroll in program courses, students must first meet academic preparedness requirements and complete the declaration process.
- Program capacity: 24 spots each Fall and Spring
- Estimated Wait Time: Up to 0-1 year wait time between when students are core ready and when they become eligible to enroll in program classes. This timeline may vary depending on how many students complete the declaration process each semester.
Submitting your application now ensures you're considered as soon as space becomes available. If the program reaches capacity, a waiting list will be used to manage additional qualified applicants.

Admission Requirements
1. Admission Application
The online application allows you to save your work as you complete it and ensures fast, secure delivery to our office.
2. Education Completion
Submit official transcripts from the institutions you attended that indicate one of the following:
- High school completion (current high school seniors may submit an in-progress transcript)
- GED/HSED completion
- College transcript or Madison College experience showing:
- Completion of an associate degree or higher, or
- At least 30 credits completed with a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4-point scale
- The credits must be completed at a single college and cannot be combined with other transcripts
- Any transfer credit listed on a transcript does not count toward the 30-credit minimum
- Credits completed at Madison College are evaluated and do not require a transcript
All high school and/or college transcripts are recommended to be submitted for Credit for Prior Learning evaluation.
3. Residency Requirement
Due to program demand and TCS 10 guidelines, this program is limited to district and non-district state residents.

Academic Preparedness Requirements
This program has academic preparedness requirements that must be completed before beginning core classes. Requirements for this program are listed below and are subject to change. Run a personalized report in your student account to confirm which requirements are complete, which are still outstanding, and how requirements may be satisfied.
When you’ve completed all academic preparedness requirements, you will submit the declaration form to confirm that you are ready to enter core program classes. These steps are part of the declaration process.

- Pre-core students admitted prior to Fall 2027: Run your Degree Progress Report in your Student Center in PeopleSoft.
- Pre-core students admitted for Fall 2027 and later: Academic preparedness requirements will be available in your Academic Progress Report in Workday. Access will be available beginning March 2027.

After completing the Medical Assistant program at Madison Area Technical College, you will be able to:
