Medical Assistant

One Year Technical Diploma

Overview

The Medical Assistant program is designed to orient students to the duties of a physician's office employee, from general office procedures to the technical phases of examining room assisting and elementary medical laboratory techniques. Occupational experience is provided through placement in a local office/clinic during the last four weeks of the final semester. 

If you have a genuine interest in medicine and in helping people, this could be a great fit for you. 

Please note that after acceptance to this program, you will be required to complete a background check and provide documentation of current required-immunizations and current Healthcare Provider CPR certification.

The courses listed below outline the requirements for completion for students officially admitted in the 2016-2017 academic year. Requirements for completion may vary depending on the semester in which a student is admitted or may be completed by other equivalent courses. Current/continuing students should consult their Academic Requirements report available through their student account for specific requirements and equivalent courses.

Outcomes

After completing the Medical Assistant program at Madison Area Technical College, you will be able to:

  • Perform medical office administrative functions
  • Provide patient care in accordance with regulations, policies, laws and patient rights
  • Perform medical laboratory procedures
  • Demonstrate professionalism in a healthcare setting
  • Demonstrate safety and emergency practices in a healthcare setting

Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification examination immediately after graduation. 

In accordance with the policies of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB), Madison College submits data to measure outcomes for our program. Data is reported annually and displayed using a five year weighted average. Listed below are five year weighted averages for three of our program outcomes submitted as part of the 2015 MAERB Annual Report Form. Access to the full report is available upon request.
