Austen Brantley artwork

Detroit sculptor Austen Brantley presents Coarse, an exploration of identity connected to hair, at Madison College's Truax Gallery (1701 Wright St.) from April 26 through May 13. The event is free and open to the public.

Brantley's artwork invites the viewer to look at the systemic racism and stereotypes connected to the textures and styles of Black hair and to consider the preferential treatment of straight hair as evidence of social barriers and biases against Black Americans.
