In 2013-14, Madison College undertook a comprehensive review of its Mission, Vision, and Values statements and developed new Strategic Directives and associated actions for Madison College. This process was led by a steering team comprised of faculty, staff, administrators, and students from across the District who engaged the entire Madison College community at Convocation sessions in October 2013 and January 2014 and other forums in the development of the mission statement and strategic directives.

Work was completed on our Academic Plan (Impact Initiative) and Student Services Plan (Pillars of Promise) in the spring of 2014. At the end of that academic year, informational sessions were held at each of our nine campuses for members of the public and Madison College employees detailing the research related to education, demographics, the labor market, and technology that was examined in identifying the Strategic Directives and actions of the Impact Initiative and Pillars of Promise.

As part of the August 2015 Convocation, I highlighted the many changes that we experienced in the two prior years – the introduction of inclusive, interest-based decision-making, statutory changes to our finances, and declines in our enrollment as our District’s economy has healed from the Great Recession and demographics have changed.

A great deal of energy was exerted by many individuals these past two years to implement identified initiatives to support our students, use interest-based problem-solving techniques, and react to the external changes that impact our service to students. Throughout this we did not lose sight of our mission, but its focus may have become blurred. This year we have dedicated ourselves to recommitting to living our mission.


Our recommitment is focused on improving our evaluation of potential decisions. Focusing on how a decision will advance our mission and the interests we have identified related to the mission, access, quality, and sustainability. We presented this framework to the Madison College community in August and in a more detailed fashion during the November 2015 Cabinet Priority Issues Update. We will spend more time exploring these elements of decision-making at the January 2016 Convocation. As discussed in November, we will also be moving our unit planning process to the spring in order to have our planning lead our budget prioritization for FY17-18 and beyond.


We know that the dynamics of the communities Madison College serves continue to rapidly evolve. So have the skills and education South-Central Wisconsin’s employers demand, as have the levels of funding for higher education. Our continued work at planning, assessing, and adjusting is crucial to our efforts to live Madison College’s mission and serve our students.
