Madison College Kicks off Equal Pay Day and Women in STEM Events

Published:

Equal Pay Day was March 12, and with it came a yearly reminder that full-time American working women, on average, make less than men—83 cents to $1, to be exact.

At Madison College, we advocate for reversing that reality. Join us for Madison College’s Equal Pay Day and STEM Week for a robust agenda of speakers, workshops, and events highlighting the importance of gender parity, and equal pay, and encouraging women to pursue STEM and trade careers.

This year’s theme is “Access, Opportunity, and Empowerment," says Sarita Field, Equal Pay Day Director and student support advisor.

“In addition to their skills, talents, and expertise, many of our students’ mere presence makes them a leader,” Field says. “Our Equal Pay events provide an opportunity to empower our students as they begin their career journeys and for us as educators to continue to evolve and improve in how we support them from the classroom to gainful employment.”

As a Research Scientist in the Center on Equity Research at NORC at the University of Chicago, she conducts research to advance equity of diversity of people, their thoughts, and experiences. Her dissertation research focused on Women of Color STEM faculty, and how these experiences shape their retention. She also works to make the transfer process equitable and transparent by creating workshops, resources, and a summer orientation program for STEM transfer students.

Madison College Equal Pay 2024 (EP24) spans the months of March and April with events for Madison College students, employees, and high school students.

“EP24 goes beyond addressing disparities; it’s about building a future where we recognize that diverse perspectives and skills are essential for progress and innovation in STEM,” says Kit Carlson, STEM Center faculty director. “Our work supports a future where every contribution is valued and respected to our collective benefit.”

EP24 closes out with an April 11 ceremony and Wolfpack Closet Grand Reopening. The newly renovated Wolfpack Closet is a one-stop resource for professional attire and career essentials. Students can check out the expanded selection of ready-for-work clothing and network with peers at the event.
