Madison College Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Recognized With Highest Achievement Honor
The Madison College Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Chapter took home a handful of awards at the recent Wisconsin Region conference, including the 5-Star Chapter award, for promoting mental wellness on campus.
The students won first place for a peer-supported mental wellness program project that trained students to help with mental wellness challenges and to break down stigmas. Chapter members developed a resource guide on six habits for good mental wellness including references to college-provided resources. There was also a workshop where students created, decorated, and filled their own "self-care jar" with motivating messages and mental well-being activities for them to pull out and read as needed.
PTK plans to further these efforts by continuing to focus on the student club, developing a programming framework and structure and increasing awareness of mental wellness support services at the college.
Madison College PTK was also recognized for its Honors in Action research project with the theme of architecture and design of play. The team received a second-place award in this theme, and fourth place for the overall project.
The team researched the integration of ‘art as play’ principles in architecture and design and how those principles enhance creativity, collaboration and innovation. They devised an action project to implement additional elements of "play" in the college's reflection room, a space for students to pray, meditate, relax or just think quietly. The team enhanced the room with artificial plants, plant wall decals, a sound machine and galaxy lights.
Additional awards received include:
- First Place, Distinguished Chapter Member: Barbara Gray
- Second Place, Distinguished Chapter Officer: Morgan Witthun
- First Place, Horizon Award for Regional Support: Chapter Advisor and Madison College employee Marty Crabbs
- Third place, Distinguished Chapter
