Madison College welcomes President Dr. Jennifer Berne
Dr. Jennifer Berne stepped into her new role as Madison College president this month, bringing a vision for enhanced student success and strong community partnerships.
President Berne oversees the seven-campus college, serving students across its 12-county district. It has been more than a decade since the college has had a new president.
“I appreciate that the Madison College community has put their faith in me to lead,” Dr. Berne says. “I recognize the significant role we play here: our students change their lives through education, our employees put their hearts into their work, and our partners recognize our significant community impacts.”
During her first weeks as president, Dr. Berne will focus on connecting with faculty and staff and talking with students. She will also meet with workforce, community, K-12, and higher education partners throughout the district.

Future vision
“We all have a vested interest in what makes Madison College a force for good in our district and the state of Wisconsin,” Dr. Berne says. “What students gain from their time here is not just a degree or credential, but a lifelong commitment to growth and change."
Dr. Berne's career spans more than 30 years in higher education, encompassing every level of academic experience from faculty member to researcher to instructional leader. Most recently, she was provost of Oakland Community College in Michigan.
She has played a key role in developing new programs, expanding dual credit options, leading faculty in teaching and learning initiatives, and supporting efforts to boost student enrollment. As a community leader, she collaborates with K-12 partners, workforce boards, and industry leaders to enhance access and create a talent pipeline.
“I’ve held many roles in higher education, and each one has prepared me to serve here, now,” Berne says. “We are positioned for future success at Madison College thanks to the transformational effort of past leaders, the dedication and innovation of our faculty and staff, and the meaningful collaborations with alumni, workforce development partners, and community members.”
A proven leader
President Berne earned her doctorate from Michigan State University, a master’s degree from Northeastern University, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. She recently graduated from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business with a master's degree in business administration.
The Madison College Board of Trustees selected Berne as president following a nationwide leadership search. Board Chair Donald D. Dantzler, Jr., enthusiastically welcomed the new president, who started on July 1.
“Dr. Berne arrives with an impressive history of putting student success front and center,” Dantzler says. “The district board of trustees is confident she will carry forward Madison College’s strategic vision, strengthening our partnerships with community and employer partners so that every learner in our district has the resources and opportunity to thrive. We are thrilled to welcome her to the college.”
Dr. Berne succeeds longtime Madison College President Jack E. Daniels III, who retired in January 2025 after 11 years of transformative leadership. Since that time, Dr. Tim Casper has served as interim president.
